Wedding Cardbox holder - Bird cage

Wedding card box’s can be present in a number of ways. The birdcage idea presented here could fit with almost any theme from traditional and very formal indoor or outdoor weddings. The decorating will lend itself to either the formal or informal theme.

The idea is to take any item that contain cards and decorate it. For example I have used a fairly cheap bird cage approximately $20 at a local pet store. Even better go to the local flea market and find one for just a few bucks! The great deal on this is that it can be used again for real! I have re-used them to put plants in and hung in my home! Don’t rent one, your wasting your money! You don’t have to be an artist or even crafty. If you don’t feel you can do this–get some help from a friend!

Invest in a container and decorate it accordingly. I decorated this birdcage to accommodate either a formal indoor or outdoor wedding.

You will need the following items:

  1. Any bird cage (it doesn’t have to be on a stand); it can just sit on the gift table.
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue gun, and glue sticks
  4. Silk flowers of your choice. Use a variety–of a couple of large, medium, and small flowers that match your color scheme. The secret is to have varying size, color and tiny flowers as filler. Have fun picking these out. You will only need a spray of each.
  5. Ivy, grape vine this came in a string from a local store but you could cut your own. This is only needed if you are using a stand for the cage.
  6. Tulle
  7. Ribbon
  8. Small floral wire. This is cheap at a local craft store, and you will have plenty to use for other decorations. Purchase green as it hides better in projects.
  9. Small wire cutters, buy a decent pair, you will find these helpful later for your home toolbox after your married.

Begin Decorating the Stand

If you are using a stand, take the bird cage off the stand and place on a table for decorating.

  1. If you are using a bird cage on a stand…wrap the vine, twirl the tulle around the vine. Do this loosely about every 12 inches, you don’t want it to be tight, but airy. Then secure with floral wire in several spots as you proceed up the pole.
  2. Do the same around the circular metal that is used for hanging the cage.

Decorating the Cage:  You will only be decorating the front and somewhat of the sides.

Think about where you will place the flowers, leaving room for a card slot.

NOTE:  You may need the wire cutters to make a larger slot. Just simply cut out a couple of wire sections. In this case, I then wrapped the area with ribbon to help delineate where the card is deposited.

  1. Think about flower placement. You will want it to be artistic. You could place flowers on just one side flowing over the edge, or you could be more symmetrical and place a small portion in each corner. This is what I used for this example.

    2. Cut the stems off the flowers you intend use. On the large flowers I only used two chrysanthemums, cut stem completely off. The roses I used I save a couple of inches, as you will tuck these behind the larger flower.

     3. Heat up your glue gun, and make sure you have ample room with the cord of the glue gun near the cage.

     4. Begin by placing glue on the back of the large flower and place close to the top corner or slightly below the left top corner. Repeat for the lower corner.

     5. Next take a couple of large leave that came with your larger flowers and glue those on either side of the large flowers. Tuck them behind the blossom.

     6. Next take your medium flowers, rose in this case, place glue on the stems and back or side of rose tuck behind and on top of the large leaves. Do this on either side.  Use a couple or 3-4, as long as it doesn’t look gaudy. Repeat for the lower corner.

     7. Next use you very small flowers and repeat the same process, tuck behind the medium flowers and gluing in place. You are actually creating a spray so to speak. Repeat for the lower corner.

     8. Next, take your tiny flowers, baby’s breath or tiny flowers and extend the spray on either edge again tucking behind the smallest flowers.  In addition, place a few as fillers between the roses, larger and small flowers.

     9. Next take a piece of ribbon and glue one end in place at one end of the stray. Loosely wrap around the flowers twining between the cage and the flower front. Tuck the ribbon between the flowers until you have creatws an airy flow of the ribbon. You can leave some ends hanging if you feel it looks appropriate.

     10. Hang the cage back on the stand and voila!!

Congratulations! You have decorated your very own card box and I’m sure it looks beautiful. You will receive many compliments on your creativity!
